AIDC

　AIDC（Automatic Identification & Data Capture）の正確な日本語表記は、JISでは「自動認識およびデータ取得」と規定されている。一般的には、AIDC技術という使い方をすることが多い。この場合は自動認識技術と訳される。

　自動認識技術は基本的には、認識対象そのものを認識する技術と認識対象が持つデータキャリアの情報を認識する技術とに分けることができる。認識対象そのものを認識する技術としては、ビデオカメラに写った画像から特定のものを識別したり、赤外線センサなどを用いて室内の移動物体を検知したり、入退室などをバイオメトリクスで管理するような技術である。この認識技術で注目されているのはバイオメトリクスである。バイオメトリクスは、人を直接認識（データベース照合）する場合と、データキャリア内のデータとの一致を検証する場合とがあり、他のデータキャリアとは少し性質が異なる。

　AIDC技術の多くは、認識対象が持つデータキャリアの情報を認識する技術である。データキャリアとしては1次元シンボル、2次元シンボル、RFID、やバイオメトリクスなどがある。カードは形状を指し、技術要素を表しているわけではない。この識別カードは大きく磁気カード、コンタクト付（接触型）ICカード、コンタクトレス（非接触）ICカードに分類できるが、重要なデータキャリアの1つである。

　AIDC技術の範疇には、データキャリアを形成する技術（例えばダイレクトマーキングなど）や複合データキャリア（例えばリライタブルハイブリッドメディアなど）も含まれる。
